On the Scoville scale, they generally rate between 30,000 to 50,000 Scoville Heat Units (SHU), making them moderately hot. Cayenne peppers are grown as annuals in most of the United States (Zones 2–11), meaning they complete their life cycle in one growing season. However, they are technically tender perennials and can survive year-round outdoors in Zones 9 through 11. Full sun is a must. cayenne pepper plants and fruits are not safe for pets.
