Hen and chicks sundew (Drosera prolifera)

For sale is the hen and chicks sundew or drosera prolifera. This is a unique species of sundew native to northern Australia and is one of the so called ‘three sisters sundews’ from Queensland with the others being drosera adelae and drosera schizandra. What makes this sundew (as well as the other two sisters from Queensland) unique is that they are one of the VERY few carnivorous plants you can grow in low light; thriving under almost any grow light and even on a north facing windowsill! However, the one things these plants do need is a ton of humidity, so I HIGHLY recommend placing them in jars, under glass bells, or in terrariums if you really want them to be happy. As long as you keep them in extremely humid conditions in bright indirect or medium light, these are some of the easiest species of sundews to grow. On top of that, they’re also EXTREMELY easy to propagate (hence both the common and scientific names) as they will readily form new plants from flower stalks and even older leaves that are touching water or the media it’s in! For soil, do NOT use compost or normal potting soil; instead i recommend planting them in long fibered sphagnum moss that doesn’t have added fertilizer. Alternatively, you can use a mix of peat and perlite, but I’ve found that these plants do MUCH better in LFSM. For feeding, I do not recommend most fertilizer for these plants as they (like most other carnivorous plants) have evolved in low nutrient environments (hence why they rely on animals for nutrients) and are incredibly sensitive to excess nutrients, especially in the soil. However, one fertilizer that I do recommend for these plants (which the late Peter D,amatio wrote about in this book the savage garden) is something called maxsea. However, I recommend diluting it a little more the the instructions suggest and avoiding adding it the medium it’s in. One final thing: do NOT use tap water (or high ppm water in general) on these plants: use either distilled, RO, or rain water instead. Alternatively, buy bottled distilled water or use certain special water filters, which is what I usually do.
